Bearing absolutely no resemblance to the 1980s TV series that helped to propel Michael Mann into big-time filmmaking, Miami Vice is the kind of serious, and seriously stylish, crime drama that Mann does better than anyone else. As written by Mann himself, this undercover sting thriller doesn't reach the peak intensity of Mann's 1995 classic Heat, and it lacks the tight, nail-biting suspense of Collateral, but that doesn't mean it doesn't occasionally pack a wallop. As Miami detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs (respectively), Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx don't have to do much but mumble their plot-thickening dialogu and look ultra-cool in the casual cop attire, and their partnership is rather lifeless on screen (perhaps owing to the fact that this was a troubled production, with an actual shooting that occurred during filming, and Foxx's refusal to risk his life on dangerous locations in South America). But once Mann shifts into high gear with a plot to foil a powerful drug kingpin (Luis Tosar) and his ruthless middle-man (John Ortiz), Vice pays off with the kind of smart, realistic action that Mann's fans have come to expect. With Chinese superstar Gong Li as Crockett's love interest on the wrong side of the law, Miami Vice covers territory that's a little too familiar, and one suspects Mann's screenplay might've been punched up with a polish or two. Still, this is an above-average crime thriller that demands and rewards close attention, with a climactic shoot-out that's pure Mann, worthy of the brooding drama that precedes it. --Jeff Shannon

As this zany space adventure continus, title character Justy uki Tylor undergoes something of a transformation, becoming less careless and more appealing: in episodes 8 and 14, he wins over Raalgon android-agent Harumi with his low-key charm. But he's still no poster boy for the United Planets Space Force. The scheming admirals at UPSF Headquarters plot what they hope will be the end of Tylor by downgrading the Soyokaze--the greatest shame a crew can endure. Even the thuggish Marines are upset, but Tylor remains oblivious. Yuriko finds a way for him to challenge the order, which he blows while his crew members consult tealeaves and pluck petals off daisies. Tylor, who attracts trouble the way a magnet attracts iron filings, destroys the fleet of the vengeful Raalgon admiral Donan through sheer dumb luck--and earns an upgrade. The thread of the narrative gets lost in episode 12, when Tylor, Yuriko, Harumi, and Lieutenant Yamamoto find themselves in a strange ghost story involving the last captain of the Soyokaze. The filmmakers never really explain what's going on, although they suggest that Admiral Fuji has been indulging in dirty tricks for a long time. A new threat emerges in episode 14, when the Frazetta-esqu Shia-Has decides she will be the one to capture Tylor for the Raalgon empress. Donald Sutherland makes Alex's laconic and utterly monstrous father the most frightening parent since John Huston in Chinatown. A series of flashbacks show how he introduced Alex to his trade, beginning with shooting squirrels in the woods. We never find out whether Alex's father has mob connections, and the fact that it's just a business to him ("This one's a big job, lots of moola, I'll buy your mother a Lexus") makes him all the more chilling. Alex's mother (the steely Barbara Bain) knows all about the family business, but his wife (Tracey Ullman) thinks he runs a mail-order company, and the only person he confides in is a therapist (John Ritter). When he meets and falls for Sarah, Alex realizes that he alone can stand up to his father, and he needs to act before his own son becomes the next apprentice.

Henry Bromell's debut film as a writer-director probes the same dark corners of the middle-aged male psyche as American Beauty and The Sopranos. Alex's tormented life is a symbol of the damage that parents can inflict on their children, and Bromell imbus his story with a tragic inevitability. Panic received a shamefully limited theatrical release, in spite of its rare combination of a great script and brilliant performances. It deserves to be rediscovered and appreciated by a much larger audience on home video. --Simon Leake

Farley and Spade have some very funny moments, but overall the film feels rushed and poorly planned.
